The Scotland holiday at Glenalmond, Perth & Kinross
Glenalmond is the Trust's only holiday based up in Scotland. Although falling under different regulations (Care Inspectorate Scotland rather than Ofsted) the holiday is run to the same standards and ethos as the English holidays. Referrals are taken mainly from Falkirk, Stirling, Paisley and Renfrewshire but will be considered from anywhere within Scotland with discussion about practicalities on an individual basis. Volunteers (or "buddies" as they are known) on the Glenalmond holiday come from throughout the UK and bring a range of skills and expertise to the week.
Glenalmond College is located a few miles west of Perth. Although a mainstream boarding school, one of the most modern boarding houses has a lift and accessible bathroom facilities which we are able to use for the week. The grounds are huge and spectacular and, together with a wide range of on site facilities, form the backdrop for many of our activities through the week.
The central location within Scotland gives ready access to a number of venues for day trips and generally two days are spent off site - trips vary from year to year and have included watersports centres, horse riding, safari park, outdoor activity centres, archery and bowling.
The rest of our time is spent enjoying the facilities at Glenalmond. We make extensive use of the swimming pool and sports hall (if the weather dictates). Our focus is on activities that encourage fun and achievement as a group - team games, music workshops and other creative sessions are often highlights of the week. There are also discos, magic shows and other entertainments to ensure that every minute of the week is packed with fun!
The Newman Trust really does enhance the lives of the disabled children who attend.
The experience was extremely important to my son – thank you both and to all the team again, and to his helper who he adored spending time with!
When my son talks about the holiday his little face lights up.
As a family we gratefully appreciate all you have done for us. It takes special people to do something like that and you are up there with the best.
My daughter was with a group of very caring, friendly and hard-working staff who helped her to have a very memorable holiday.
This whole experience has helped [my daughter] to grow in confidence and has been a real boost to her social skills.
